B1.2: piston-engine aeroplanes
B1.2 is the mechanical licence category for aeroplanes fitted with piston engines, the type widely used by flying clubs, flying training organisations and general aviation operators.
At Redwings Aerotechnique the B1.2 basic training runs for 2000 hours over three years, with classes in Hindi and English and an online test series for DGCA module preparation. Each batch has up to 60 students.
Students who clear the DGCA basic knowledge modules and complete the maintenance experience set by DGCA under CAR-66 get the AME licence in Category B1.2. The required experience for B1.2 is three years, shorter than for B1.1 and B2.
Core work of a B1.2 engineer
Inspect
Check piston engines, airframe and systems on light aircraft.
Repair
Fix defects as per approved maintenance data.
Overhaul support
Work on engine and component maintenance tasks.
Certify
Release the aircraft to service once licensed and authorised.
B1.2 syllabus
B1.2 students study the DGCA modules for piston aeroplanes. Redwings prepares students for each module exam with classroom teaching, workshop practicals and test series.
- Module 3: Electrical Fundamentals
- Module 4: Electronic Fundamentals
- Module 5: Digital Techniques
- Module 6: Materials and Hardware
- Module 7A: Maintenance Practices
- Module 8: Basic Aerodynamics
- Module 9A: Human Factors
- Module 10: Aviation Legislation
- Module 11B: Piston Aeroplane Structures and Systems
- Module 16: Piston Engine
- Module 17A: Propeller

Where B1.2 engineers work
B1.2 engineers work with flying clubs, flying training organisations, charter operators and MROs that maintain piston aircraft. Many build experience on light aircraft before moving to other categories.
Every Indian-registered aircraft needs certification by a DGCA-licensed AME before flight, so licensed B1.2 engineers are needed wherever piston aircraft fly.

- General aviation and charter
- MROs for light aircraft

Train at Redwings Aerotechnique, Bhopal
Redwings Aerotechnique is a DGCA-approved CAR-147 basic maintenance training organisation in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. It is part of Redwings Group, which also runs its own DGCA-approved CAR-145 maintenance, repair and overhaul organisation. This connection means students learn aircraft maintenance from people who work to real industry standards every day.
Students can choose the B1.1 (turbine aeroplanes), B1.2 (piston aeroplanes) or B2 (avionics) stream, or the dual programme AME + B.E. Classes follow the DGCA syllabus and are supported by an engine system lab, airframe system lab, electrical, radio navigation, instrument and battery workshops, a general workshop, audio-visual classrooms and a library. Teaching and counselling are available in Hindi and English.
Admission is through the Redwings Aerotechnique admission test, or by direct joining after an eligibility check. Merit scholarships are offered on the admission test score. Redwings students have recorded 100% results in DGCA module examinations across several sessions, and the first Redwings batch achieved 100% placement in airline and MRO jobs.
You are welcome to visit the Bhopal campus to see the labs and workshops, meet the faculty and talk to the admission team before you decide. Parents can join the counselling session too.
