Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course is one of the highly rewarding technical courses with immense job opportunity for 12th PCM/Diploma students leading to issue of license from DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) Ministry of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India for maintaining Aircrafts as Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. Generally, it is not any degree or diploma programme. It is licensing a programme course under approved and conducted in Basic Maintenance Training Organization (BMTO) approved by DGCA, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India.
Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is the key person responsible for Airworthiness condition of aircraft and maintaining it to the standards of ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and also Certify the Aircraft before take-off.
The total training period of the course is four years, after completing 3 years of basic training covered in six semesters then applicant require 1 year of practical maintenance training on operating aircraft.
As on today Aircraft Maintenance Engineer license holders are acute shortage. No one AME license holders are unemployed, whereas in the other technical fields there is a lot of unemployment.
Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers salary is very lucrative and very attractive perks. AMEs are some of the highly paid professionals.
Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is the sole engineer responsible for the maintenance and overhaul of aircraft, engines, instruments, electrical and radio equipment and their accessories. Aircraft Maintenance Engineer issues the certificate of flight release which declares the aircraft airworthy and fit for flying.
The AMERAT is stands for ‘Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Redwings Aptitude Test’. AMERAT is a national level entrance exam provide an opportunity for talented aspirants who have passed or (appearing also) 12th with PCM/Diploma to join Aircraft Maintenance Engineering approved by DGCA, Govt. of India.
The main difference between AME and Aeronautical engineer, AME deals with Aircraft maintenance and its certification and Aeronautical Engineer deals with Aircraft’s designing and manufacturing.
The civil aviation industry in India has emerged as one of the fastest growing industries in the country during the last four years after introducing UDAN Scheme that is “ Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik”. India has become the third largest domestic aviation market in the world and is expected to overtake UK to become the third largest air passenger market by 2024 so that there is a high demand for trained professional at the Aviation industry, including the Aircraft Maintenance Engineers. AME plays a important role in term of aircraft’s safety before it’s take off.
For getting admission in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course in DGCA approved institute, applicant must have passed 10+2 examination in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from a recognized board or University or it’s equivalent. There is no requirement of any common entrance examination for getting admission in any institution.
Aircraft Maintenance Engineer are well known as AME. He is licensed person, who carries out aircraft maintenance to keep an aircraft airworthy. To become AME, firstly the applicant must have passed 10+2 examination in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from a recognized board or University or it’s equivalent. Then applicant has to take three years basic training under CAR-147 Basic Training organization. After completing 3 years of basic training then applicant require 1 year of practical maintenance training on operating aircraft to meet the type training requirement as per aircraft rules and applicant has to pass all written modules and oral examination conducted by CEO, DGCA for the license of particular type of Aircraft.

In India, Recent industry reports suggest that nearly 72,900 jobs for AMEs and technicians will be created in India across Airlines and MROs sector by 2032. The need is to equip the AMEs with skills that make them dynamic stake holders of India’s economic future.
NO, there is no need to appear for any entrance exams. Moreover, DGCA (Ministry of Civil Aviation) who is the whole sole authority of Aviation in India doesn’t conduct any Entrance exam for the AME course.
