What is a type rating?
A type rating allows a licensed engineer to certify maintenance on a specific aircraft type, such as a particular airliner or engine combination.
Engineers usually get type ratings after their basic licence, through type training and experience on that aircraft.
The usual path
Basic licence
Get the B1 or B2 licence.
Type training
Complete training on a specific aircraft type.
Experience
Gain practical experience on that type.
Endorsement
Get the type endorsed on the licence.
Type ratings and career growth
Type-rated engineers can certify work on the aircraft they are rated on and usually move into senior and supervisory roles.
- Certification authority
- Senior roles
- Airline career growth
- Specialisation

The first step is basic training
Every type rating starts with basic AME training at a DGCA-approved institute like Redwings.
- CAR-147 basic training
- DGCA module exams
- Practical experience
- Licence

Train at Redwings Aerotechnique, Bhopal
Redwings Aerotechnique is a DGCA-approved CAR-147 basic maintenance training organisation in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. It is part of Redwings Group, which also runs its own DGCA-approved CAR-145 maintenance, repair and overhaul organisation. This connection means students learn aircraft maintenance from people who work to real industry standards every day.
Students can choose the B1.1 (turbine aeroplanes), B1.2 (piston aeroplanes) or B2 (avionics) stream, or the dual programme AME + B.E. Classes follow the DGCA syllabus and are supported by an engine system lab, airframe system lab, electrical, radio navigation, instrument and battery workshops, a general workshop, audio-visual classrooms and a library. Teaching and counselling are available in Hindi and English.
Admission is through the Redwings Aerotechnique admission test, or by direct joining after an eligibility check. Merit scholarships are offered on the admission test score. Redwings students have recorded 100% results in DGCA module examinations across several sessions, and the first Redwings batch achieved 100% placement in airline and MRO jobs.
You are welcome to visit the Bhopal campus to see the labs and workshops, meet the faculty and talk to the admission team before you decide. Parents can join the counselling session too.

Why students choose Redwings
Type ratings and how they shape your career
The basic AME licence proves broad knowledge of aircraft maintenance. A type rating proves detailed knowledge of one specific aircraft type, allowing the engineer to certify work on it.
Why type ratings exist
Each aircraft type has its own systems, procedures, limits and manuals. An engineer certifying work on a particular airliner must know that aircraft in depth, which is why type training is required.
Type training
Type training covers the aircraft’s structures, systems, engines and maintenance procedures in detail, often followed by practical training on the actual aircraft. It is usually provided by approved organisations, often arranged by employers.
Experience
Engineers need practical experience on the aircraft type before the rating is endorsed. This makes sure they can apply their knowledge on the hangar floor.
Career value
Type-rated engineers are trusted with certification on the fleet they work on, and they often move into shift leader and senior engineer roles. Many engineers add more than one type rating during their careers.
The first step
Everything starts with basic training. Redwings Aerotechnique provides DGCA-approved basic training in B1.1, B1.2 and B2, the foundation every future type rating builds on.
