Suck, squeeze, bang, blow
A gas turbine engine draws air in, compresses it, mixes it with fuel and burns it, then expands the hot gas through turbines and out of the exhaust to produce thrust.
Turbofans, turbojets, turboprops and turboshafts are all variations of this idea.
Types of gas turbine engines
Turbofan
Most airliners; a large fan gives most of the thrust.
Turbojet
All thrust from the exhaust jet.
Turboprop
The turbine drives a propeller.
Turboshaft
Drives a shaft, common in helicopters.
Engine maintenance basics
Engineers inspect engines with borescopes, check oil and fuel systems, monitor engine health and change components.

Train at Redwings Aerotechnique, Bhopal
Redwings Aerotechnique is a DGCA-approved CAR-147 basic maintenance training organisation in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. It is part of Redwings Group, which also runs its own DGCA-approved CAR-145 maintenance, repair and overhaul organisation. This connection means students learn aircraft maintenance from people who work to real industry standards every day.
Students can choose the B1.1 (turbine aeroplanes), B1.2 (piston aeroplanes) or B2 (avionics) stream, or the dual programme AME + B.E. Classes follow the DGCA syllabus and are supported by an engine system lab, airframe system lab, electrical, radio navigation, instrument and battery workshops, a general workshop, audio-visual classrooms and a library. Teaching and counselling are available in Hindi and English.
Admission is through the Redwings Aerotechnique admission test, or by direct joining after an eligibility check. Merit scholarships are offered on the admission test score. Redwings students have recorded 100% results in DGCA module examinations across several sessions, and the first Redwings batch achieved 100% placement in airline and MRO jobs.
You are welcome to visit the Bhopal campus to see the labs and workshops, meet the faculty and talk to the admission team before you decide. Parents can join the counselling session too.

Why students choose Redwings
Inside the gas turbine engine
Gas turbine engines produce enormous power while being relatively light and reliable. Understanding how air moves through them helps engineers understand every maintenance task.
The air path
Air enters through the intake and is compressed by stages of rotating and stationary blades. Fuel is sprayed into the compressed air in the combustion chamber and burned, raising its temperature sharply. The hot gas then expands through turbine stages, which drive the compressor and fan, before leaving through the exhaust.
Spools and bypass
Many engines have two or three shafts, called spools, turning at different speeds. In a turbofan, the large front fan pushes much of the air around the core as bypass air, producing most of the thrust efficiently and quietly.
Supporting systems
Lubrication, fuel, air, starting and ignition systems keep the engine running safely, while indication and monitoring systems track temperatures, pressures and speeds.
Maintenance
Engineers carry out borescope inspections, oil analysis, filter checks, component changes and engine runs, and record engine health trends to catch problems early.
Learning it at Redwings
B1.1 students study Module 15, and B2 students study engine systems in Module 14. The engine system lab helps students understand engine construction.
