Landing gear, brakes and steering
The landing gear supports the aircraft on the ground, absorbs landing loads and allows taxiing, braking and steering.
Landing gear maintenance is a major part of B1 mechanical work.
Landing gear components
Shock strut
Absorbs landing loads.
Retraction
Raises and lowers the gear.
Wheels and brakes
Allow rolling and stopping.
Steering
Directs the aircraft on the ground.
Landing gear maintenance
Engineers service struts, inspect tyres and brakes, check retraction and indication systems and lubricate components.
- Tyre and brake checks
- Strut servicing
- Retraction tests
- Lubrication

Where you study landing gear
Landing gear is part of Module 11 for B1 students and is studied in the airframe lab at Redwings.

Train at Redwings Aerotechnique, Bhopal
Redwings Aerotechnique is a DGCA-approved CAR-147 basic maintenance training organisation in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. It is part of Redwings Group, which also runs its own DGCA-approved CAR-145 maintenance, repair and overhaul organisation. This connection means students learn aircraft maintenance from people who work to real industry standards every day.
Students can choose the B1.1 (turbine aeroplanes), B1.2 (piston aeroplanes) or B2 (avionics) stream, or the dual programme AME + B.E. Classes follow the DGCA syllabus and are supported by an engine system lab, airframe system lab, electrical, radio navigation, instrument and battery workshops, a general workshop, audio-visual classrooms and a library. Teaching and counselling are available in Hindi and English.
Admission is through the Redwings Aerotechnique admission test, or by direct joining after an eligibility check. Merit scholarships are offered on the admission test score. Redwings students have recorded 100% results in DGCA module examinations across several sessions, and the first Redwings batch achieved 100% placement in airline and MRO jobs.
You are welcome to visit the Bhopal campus to see the labs and workshops, meet the faculty and talk to the admission team before you decide. Parents can join the counselling session too.

Why students choose Redwings
Landing gear: the hardest-working system on the aircraft
Every landing puts large loads into the landing gear, and every taxi, turn and stop depends on it. That is why landing gear inspections and servicing appear so often in maintenance programmes.
Shock absorption
Most aircraft use oleo-pneumatic shock struts that combine oil and compressed gas. On landing, oil is forced through small openings to absorb energy while the gas acts as a spring. Correct servicing of oil and gas levels keeps landings smooth and protects the structure.
Retraction and indication
Retractable gear is moved by hydraulic or electric actuators, with locks to hold it securely up or down. Sensors and indicator lights tell the crew whether the gear is safely locked. Emergency extension systems allow the gear to be lowered if normal power is lost.
Wheels, tyres and brakes
Tyres are checked for pressure, wear and damage. Brakes are checked for wear using wear indicators, and anti-skid systems prevent wheels from locking. Steering systems on the nose gear let the aircraft turn on the ground.
Learning it at Redwings
Landing gear is part of Module 11 for B1 students. The airframe system lab helps students see components and understand inspection and servicing tasks before working on real aircraft.
