AME B1 vs B2: Which Stream to Choose
B1.1, B1.2 or B2? Understand the difference
The AME licence has mechanical (B1) and avionics (B2) categories. Here is how to choose the right stream at Redwings.
B1.1, B1.2 and B2 at a glance
All three are taught in a three-year, six-semester programme.
B1.1 · Aeroplane turbine
2400 hours. Mechanical maintenance of turbine-engine aeroplanes.
B1.2 · Aeroplane piston
2000 hours. Mechanical maintenance of piston-engine aeroplanes.
B2 · Avionics
2400 hours. Electrical, instrument and radio-navigation systems.
How to pick the right stream
Choose B1 if you enjoy mechanical work: engines, airframes and systems. B1.1 is for turbine aeroplanes, B1.2 for piston aeroplanes.
Choose B2 if you prefer electronics, instruments and navigation systems. Avionics engineers maintain the electrical and electronic side of an aircraft.
Not sure? Our counsellors can help in Hindi or English. The same eligibility applies to all streams: 10+2 with PCM or an engineering diploma, and admission through AMERAT.
How to choose between B1 and B2
The B1 mechanical streams cover the aircraft structure, engines and mechanical systems. B1.1 focuses on aeroplanes with turbine engines and B1.2 on aeroplanes with piston engines.
The B2 avionics stream covers aircraft electrical systems, instruments, radio and navigation. If you enjoy electronics and systems, B2 may suit you; if you like engines and mechanical systems, B1 is the natural choice.
All streams need 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and all lead to a DGCA licence after the module exams and the required practical experience.
