A, B1, B2, B3 and C explained
The DGCA AME licence under CAR-66 has different categories. Each category allows an engineer to certify different types of maintenance work.
Knowing the categories helps you choose the right stream and plan your career.
What each category covers
Category A
Certifying minor scheduled line maintenance and simple defect rectification within limits.
Category B1
Mechanical: structures, engines and mechanical and electrical systems. Sub-categories B1.1 to B1.4.
Category B2
Avionics and electrical systems.
Category B3
Piston-engine, non-pressurised aeroplanes up to a weight limit.
Category C
Base maintenance certification of a complete aircraft.
Which category should you aim for?
If you like engines and mechanical systems, aim for B1. If you like electronics and systems, aim for B2. Category C comes later with experience.
- B1.1 turbine aeroplanes
- B1.2 piston aeroplanes
- B2 avionics
- C after experience

Train at Redwings Aerotechnique, Bhopal
Redwings Aerotechnique is a DGCA-approved CAR-147 basic maintenance training organisation in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. It is part of Redwings Group, which also runs its own DGCA-approved CAR-145 maintenance, repair and overhaul organisation. This connection means students learn aircraft maintenance from people who work to real industry standards every day.
Students can choose the B1.1 (turbine aeroplanes), B1.2 (piston aeroplanes) or B2 (avionics) stream, or the dual programme AME + B.E. Classes follow the DGCA syllabus and are supported by an engine system lab, airframe system lab, electrical, radio navigation, instrument and battery workshops, a general workshop, audio-visual classrooms and a library. Teaching and counselling are available in Hindi and English.
Admission is through the Redwings Aerotechnique admission test, or by direct joining after an eligibility check. Merit scholarships are offered on the admission test score. Redwings students have recorded 100% results in DGCA module examinations across several sessions, and the first Redwings batch achieved 100% placement in airline and MRO jobs.
You are welcome to visit the Bhopal campus to see the labs and workshops, meet the faculty and talk to the admission team before you decide. Parents can join the counselling session too.

Why students choose Redwings
How to choose your licence category
Choosing a licence category is one of the first big decisions for an AME student. It shapes the modules you study, the work you do and your early career.
Think about your interests
If you enjoy engines, machines and hands-on mechanical work, B1 may suit you. If you enjoy electronics, instruments and systems, B2 may suit you better.
Think about aircraft types
B1.1 focuses on turbine aeroplanes used by most airlines, while B1.2 focuses on piston aeroplanes used in training and general aviation. B2 covers avionics across aircraft types.
Think about long-term growth
All categories offer growth. Engineers can add type ratings, move into supervisory roles and, with experience, progress towards base maintenance certification.
Get guidance
Talking to experienced engineers and counsellors helps. At Redwings Aerotechnique, counsellors explain each stream in detail and help students choose based on their interests and goals.
